New Research Project to Explore Water Quality in the River Kent

A new study led by Dr Isabel Douterelo is set to explore the sources of faecal pollution and microbial activity in the River Kent.

The research builds on findings from a 2022 Clean River Kent Campaign (CRKC) water monitoring project, which analysed samples from six sites between Staveley and Sedgwick, including stretches downstream from wastewater treatment works in Staveley and Kendal. The results showed elevated levels of common faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and Enterococcus spp)

Dr Douterelo’s research will use advanced biomolecular techniques to trace the sources of faecal bacteria in the River Kent, distinguishing between human and animal origins. The findings will help inform and support ongoing efforts to protect and improve the river’s water quality for both people and wildlife.
